Big News For Bathrooms

By: Kristen Schwartz

Big or small, bathroom design trends are just as important as trends for other rooms of the home. Homeowners are beginning to embrace the concept that the bathroom doesn’t need to be purely utilitarian but can (& should!) be aesthetically pleasing & functional. Many of the trends I’m seeing for 2024 extend from the main rooms of a home into the bathrooms & I couldn’t be more excited!

Warm, Neutral Colors

The shift away from stark all-white or dreary gray bathrooms toward warm white, cream, & beige tones; lighter wood tones like white oak & maple; & mushroom, warm brown & caramel tones throughout will immediately make you feel wrapped in a warm blanket. By suggesting this color palate to homeowners, my goal is to create a soothing space that inspires feelings of relaxation & calm.

Pops Of Saturated Color

Having a neutral color base doesn’t mean color is absent. If you’re a fan of my blogs, you know that earthy green is one of my go-to colors when working with neutral backgrounds. Other great colors to consider are dark tones like raisin, purple & blue. These are great for cabinetry & tile because their deep, saturated tones have a grounding & calming effect. Well-thought Out Design Choices

As I mentioned earlier, I’m excited that homeowners are realizing that bathrooms don’t need to be purely utilitarian spaces. Since bathrooms are typically private spaces or a quick stop for guests, they are the perfect place to let your creative side shine! Eclectic tile, fun wallpaper, or art are just a few examples of ways to personalize a bathroom. This powder room strikes a classic pose with green tile & green wallpaper with brass fixtures. This beauty will never go out of style!

Decorative Lighting

Lighting is the perfect way to use functional elements as décor, especially in a bathroom where there are fewer opportunities for decorative objects. I love using pendants or sconces over sinks instead of the traditional light bar. Something about these unexpected fixtures reads subtle class to me & they come in so many designs! A chandelier in the middle of a large bathroom or over a tub is beautiful, functional & offers ambient light especially if it’s on a dimmer. Adding LED strips underneath cabinets adds a sense of security for late-night trips to the bathroom when turning on bright lights is not ideal.

And finally…

The Medicine Cabinet

These workhorses are definitely not the same thing common in homes of the 60’s & 70’s. Today’s medicine cabinets come in all shapes, sizes & finishes. Recessed versions are most popular because they look like a regular mirror & offer a ton of storage space. Unless you love the look of a crowded countertop, a modern version of the medicine cabinet may be just the answer to your need for extra storage.
